"Design Your Graphics for More Impact" Toolkit

toolkit 2

Have you ever felt ashamed of sending a prospective client to your website? What about that business card that you sheepishly hand out to the clients or the brochure you constantly appologize for? Too bright, too soft, the font is too large, the logo isn’t quite finished, address is missing, your title is mixed up, not the right size…

Well, you rightfully feel ashamed for your reputation. The perception of you, of you whole life’s work depends on a single visual interpretation of a brochure, a book cover, a website or the suit you’re wearing.

According to Albert Mehrabian's classic research work on non-verbal communication, Silent Messages, first impressions are based on the following criteria: 55% is visual, 38% is our voice, and only 7% is based on what we actually say. This is particularly exagerated in the fast paced internet environment. In fact, the Web makes the case for visuals more directly than any packaged good or consumer product ever could. The Web says that anyone can have a Web site. And today, because anyone can ... anyone does!

Have you noticed those website with screaming large titles, overlapping frames, pixelated images, spastic type that changes from bold to italic to capitals in each sentence, rugged paragraphs? The state of web aestethics is soo depressingly poor today, that it leaves a amazingly flexible room for improvement for you. Even good writing is very rarely complemented by a stylish graphic design. How do you think clients know which sites are worth visiting, which sites to bookmark, which sites are worth going to more than once?

The answer: identity.

The sites you go back to are the sites you trust. They're the sites where visuals tell you that the visit will be worth your time - again and again. The visuals are a promise of the value you'll receive. Once you are clear on your business strategy and offerings, do me a favor and quickly brainstorm on this question for me – what is it that makes you different than other writers and authors? Then cook up some visual ideas and don’t hold back on implementing your answer with those visuals.

Keep in mind your audience – what do they like, what do they hate? Don’t underestimate people’s need for visual satisfaction. We all seek beauty and order in our own special way.

See, design matters. The design of your images, photos, colors and words on the page matters. Powerful messages are like diamonds in the row when they are not set in the right visual environment. You don’t have to do much in order to set the right visual environment. All you have to do is just do ENOUGH so you don’t harm the aesthetics of your product.
